The thyroid gland is essential for regulating the body\u2019s metabolic rate and does this by producing hormones that keep it in balance \u2013 the most important one being thyroxine. When the thyroid gland doesn\u2019t function properly, the resulting hormone imbalance can wreak havoc with the body\u2019s metabolism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>There are two types of thyroid gland disorders. <em>Hyperthyroidism<\/em> is when the thyroid is overactive (producing too much thyroxine), causing the body\u2019s metabolism to speed up. <em>Hypothyroidism<\/em> is when the thyroid is underactive (producing too little thyroxine), causing the metabolism to slow down. Both conditions can affect virtually every organ in a pet\u2019s body, causing undesirable symptoms and many debilitating illnesses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hypothyroidism<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hypothyroidism most commonly affects dogs, although it does occur on rare occasions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/blog\/the-many-benefits-of-cat-ownership\/\">in cats<\/a>. The most common causes of hypothyroidism in dogs are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Lymphocytic thyroiditis<\/strong> \u2013 Occurs when the body attacks the thyroid gland, causing it to produce less of the hormone. This is thought to be an immune-related disorder that most likely has a genetic component.<\/li><li><strong>Idiopathic thyroid gland atrophy<\/strong> \u2013 Occurs when normal thyroid tissue is replaced by fatty tissue.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The symptoms of hypothyroidism include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fatigue\/lethargy<\/li><li>Weight gain with no increase in appetite<\/li><li>Intolerance to cold, easily gets cold<\/li><li>Dull, dry fur, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/blog\/help-why-does-my-dog-have-stinky-fur\/\">flaky\/greasy skin and coat<\/a><\/li><li>Excessive shedding, bald spots, failure of fur to regrow after trimming<\/li><li>Slowed heart rate<\/li><li>Increased cholesterol<\/li><li>Increased skin pigmentation<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hypothyroidism is diagnosed with a blood test and, while not curable, the condition is treatable with medication. Hypothyroid dogs will need to be on an oral thyroid replacement for the remainder of their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hyperthyroidism<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hyperthyroidism is a common feline disorder that predominantly affects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/blog\/the-wonderful-world-of-senior-pet-adoption\/\">middle-aged and senior cats<\/a>. The condition is caused by a tumor (almost always benign) growing on the thyroid gland, resulting in an increased production of thyroid hormone. While the tumor itself normally doesn\u2019t pose a problem, the symptoms can be life threatening.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Signs that your cat may have hyperthyroidism include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Weight loss<\/li><li>Increased appetite<\/li><li>Increased thirst\/urination<\/li><li>Increased vocalization<\/li><li>Vomiting\/diarrhea<\/li><li>Hyperactivity or other behavioral changes<\/li><li>Unkempt looking, greasy, or matted coat&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Feline hyperthyroidism is diagnosed with a blood test. Medication aimed at controlling the disease is the most common treatment. Some cats benefit from surgery to remove the thyroid gland and others from an injection of radioactive iodine, which destroys the abnormal tissues.
