Holiday meals and parties, cookies at the office and at Grandma\u2019s house, and extra treats from friends and neighbors can add up over time, causing a run on gym memberships and diet cookbooks come January 2nd.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pets, too, can suffer the ill effects of overindulgence, including the health and mobility consequences that go along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/blog\/obesity-in-pets\/\">extra weight<\/a>. Fortunately, it doesn\u2019t have to be difficult to keep your furry friend fit and trim during the holidays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A little bit of planning, a commitment to your pet\u2019s well being, and the support of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/\">Lone Tree Veterinary Medical Center<\/a> team will go a long way toward making sure your pet is fit all season long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get Moving to Keep Your Pet Fit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Colorado winters are nothing to sneeze at, but that\u2019s no excuse to forgo exercise for your pet (or yourself!). Try the following ideas for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/blog\/pet-exercise\/\">safe and fun pet exercise<\/a> this holiday season:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Invest in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedogoutdoors.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">waterproof outerwear <\/a>for your dog, and get out for a walk or hike regardless of the weather. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/blog\/the-principles-of-winter-paw-protection\/\">Be mindful of paw care<\/a>. Supply your pet with <a href=\"https:\/\/ruffwear.com\/collections\/dog-boots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">booties<\/a> or paw wax and be sure to clean the paws thoroughly when you arrive home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a snowball fight with your pet, build a snowman (or snowdog), or explore a snowy trail together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Indoor only pets can also benefit from your creativity. Research or invent fun ways to keep them entertained. Think think balls, tug o\u2019 war, hide n\u2019 seek, cat trees, cardboard boxes or paper bag fun, and DIY pet games).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are regularly gone all day, enlist the help of a friend, neighbor, or pet sitter to walk and\/or play with your pet in the middle of the day. Plan for a walk or playtime with your pet when you get home.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Importance of Nutrition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another aspect of keeping your pet fit is calories. Calories count for pets as much as they do for people. Too much food (even the healthy stuff) can lead to excess pounds. It\u2019s easy to slip a table scrap to a begging pet, especially during the holiday season. Besides adding extra calories, human foods can create gastrointestinal problems for pets. Also, many favorite holiday foods can be toxic to pets (think chocolate, onions, grapes, fatty meats or anything with Xylitol added). Even the smallest amount of any fatty food can lead to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/blog\/pancreatitis-pets\/\">serious inflammatory condition called pancreatitis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feed your pet a high-quality, commercially prepared food formulated by a reputable manufacturer for its specific life stage (puppy, adult, senior). And, the importance of portion control cannot be understated. Your veterinarian can help you determine the correct daily amount for your pet\u2019s size and activity level.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Word About Treats<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since treats can count toward your pet&#8217;s daily intake, the safest way to award them is to set aside a small amount from its daily food portion to give between meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We do not recommend feeding pets human food. Choose from many safe, commercially prepared treat options formulated specifically for pets. They come in a variety of flavors and treat types, including, hypoallergenic, low calorie, and dental treats. We make a point of carrying our favorite \u201cpet-approved\u201d treat products in our lobby store.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that extra treats also count as extra calories. So if you\u2019re giving treats, adjust the amount of food you\u2019re feeding that day to compensate for the treat calories!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It Takes Both<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Proper nutrition and food portions combined with daily activity go a long way towards helping our pets stay trim and feeling good throughout their lives.
