While it\u2019s easy to understand the danger wildfires pose to people, homes and property, have you ever considered how wildfires affect our pets? The team at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lone Tree Veterinary Medical Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is here with tips for pet safety during the wildfire season!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wildfire Evacuations<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suffice it to say that evacuations don\u2019t always occur at a time that\u2019s convenient for us. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to plan ahead and know how to care for your pet should the need arise. <\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plan for where your pet might go (human shelters usually don\u2019t allow animals). Consider friends, family members, or a nearby pet boarding facility or animal shelter. We <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/services\/boarding-lodge.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">board<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dogs and cats<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prepare an evacuation kit for your pet, which should include food, water, bowls, carrier, leash, collar with current ID tags, toys, waste bags\/litter box and litter, and any other daily needs. Also assemble and include a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/blog\/pet-first-aid-kit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pet first aid kit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure your pet\u2019s records, including vaccinations and medications, are stored in one easy-to-access location; keep duplicates in your evacuation kit.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During an evacuation, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> take your pets; do whatever you can to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leave them behind in your home, in a crate or tethered outdoors. If you have no choice (as with hiding cats), notify the local humane societies and emergency personnel as to where your pets are. Leave plenty of food and water. It\u2019s also a good idea to place a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/PETSAVERS-Inside-Sticker-Static-Adhesive\/dp\/B01DXJO1Q8\/ref=asc_df_B01DXJO1Q8\/?tag=hyprod-20&amp;linkCode=df0&amp;hvadid=167136834874&amp;hvpos=1o2&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvrand=16462757420467536113&amp;hvpone=&amp;hvptwo=&amp;hvqmt=&amp;hvdev=c&amp;hvdvcmdl=&amp;hvlocint=&amp;hvlocphy=9030087&amp;hvtargid=pla-375477635517&amp;psc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cpet inside\u201d sticker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on front windows and doors. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Damaging Effects of Smoke<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with the threat of evacuation, comes the toxic smoke that can linger for weeks during and after a wildfire. Airborne particles from burning trees, tires, plastics, paint, insulation, and other noxious substances can cause health problems for both pets and people. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of smoke inhalation in pets include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coughing, wheezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sneezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal discharge<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redness of the eyes, inflammation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chewing or licking at skin or paws<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye discharge<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lethargy<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ongoing smoke inhalation can damage a pet\u2019s lungs and airways, causing long-term respiratory illness. If you live in an area where smoke from a fire has settled, protect your pets by keeping them inside in a ventilated area. Use fans and air filters to help keep indoor air circulating and to dissipate any smoke that is present. If the smoke is especially heavy, you might consider leaving the area until the smoke clears. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet Safety During Fire Season<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the wildfire season, we recommend staying on top of wildfire alerts and being prepared to act quickly in a way that accounts for your pet\u2019s safety.
