That person is a veterinary technician, and without him or her, no veterinary hospital or clinic could function effectively.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><b>What Does a Veterinary Technician Do?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In practical terms, the veterinary technician\u2019s job is to assist the veterinarian in technical matters. Much like a nurse assisting a physician, a veterinary technician\u2019s day is multifaceted, with typical duties that include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providing nursing care and first aid<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assisting veterinarians during examinations and procedures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conducting routine procedures, such as vaccinations, nail trimming and anal sac expression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performing or assisting with blood tests, urinalyses, fecal exams, and other diagnostic testing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking radiographs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phlebotomy and intravenous catheter placement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preparing animals for surgery, assisting during surgery, and monitoring post-surgical recovery<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitoring anesthesia during a surgical procedure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performing dental cleanings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performing therapeutic laser treatments<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitoring and nursing hospitalized patients<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Documenting medical charts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preparing prescription medications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Educating pet owners on topics such as nutrition and pet foods, medications, care products, vaccinations, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/blog\/rabies-and-pets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disease prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/blog\/dog-bite-prevention\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">behavior issues<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A career as a veterinary technician is not for the faint of heart. Besides possessing a love and compassion for animals, veterinary technicians must have physical stamina, as they often spend long periods of time on their feet and may be called on to lift, restrain, or manage large or unruly pets. They must also be able to adapt to a variety of situations, from basic nursing care to emergency and critical care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A veterinary technician should also have the strong interpersonal skills required to communicate effectively with pet owners and other members of the veterinary medical team. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Trained Professionals<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to become a veterinary technician, one must obtain two to four years of post high school education, through a program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), that results in an Associate\u2019s or Bachelor\u2019s degree in veterinary technology.
