Studies show that diabetes now affects a whopping 1 in 50 dogs and cats, and doesn\u2019t show any signs of slowing down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because diabetes in pets is more common than most people realize, combating this disease requires education and diligence on the part of responsible pet owners.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><b>Diabetes 101<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes mellitus, the most common form of the condition in pets, is a disease of the pancreas. In a healthy animal, the pancreas produces insulin, a hormone that allows the body to utilize sugar and energy, and regulate the blood sugar levels. In a diabetic pet, the pancreas either cannot produce enough insulin to process the sugar or the pet\u2019s body cannot effectively use the insulin, leading to insulin resistance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a pet cannot produce or utilize insulin, its blood sugar levels become elevated, causing a condition called hyperglycemia. \u00a0Serious and complicated health problems will result and, if \u00a0left untreated, the pet will become very ill and die.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Does My Pet Have Diabetes?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes in pets can manifest in subtle ways, and many of the symptoms are similar to those experienced by human diabetes sufferers. Signs that your pet may have diabetes include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive thirst<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lethargy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased appetite (early in the disease)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased appetite (as the disease advances)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More frequent urination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight loss<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pungent breath (often described as having a \u201csweet\u201d or \u201cchemical\u201d odor)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall weakness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting\/diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cloudy eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catching the disease in its early stages is critical in the successful treatment of your pet. It\u2019s important to be familiar with your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/blog\/the-amazing-canine-a-spotlight-on-professional-dogs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/blog\/hairballs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cat\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> baseline health so that you can catch any changes in behavior or appearance early. And, although the symptoms may diminish with treatment, it\u2019s important to keep your pet on his or her diabetes medication as prescribed by your veterinarian.
