To keep your pet safe and out of the emergency room, we&#8217;ve put together essential Valentine&#8217;s Day pet safety tips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Flower Arrangements<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Flowers and Valentine\u2019s Day go hand in hand. Selecting the perfect flower arrangement is already challenging, but it becomes even trickier when considering which flowers could be harmful to your pets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Non-Toxic<\/strong> <strong>Flowers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is a list of flowers you can safely include in your flower arrangements or bouquets. Just to be safe, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/pet-care\/animal-poison-control\/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AS<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/pet-care\/animal-poison-control\/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants\">PCA has a complete list of toxic and non-toxic flowers and plants.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Roses:<\/strong> Just remember to remove any thorns to prevent injury.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gerbera Daisies<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Snapdragons<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/pet-care\/animal-poison-control\/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants\/phalaenopsis-orchid\"><strong>Phalaenopsis Orchids<\/strong><\/a> &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Freesia<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sunflowers<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lisianthus<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Toxic Flowers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>These flowers should avoided in the home and in your garden:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lilies<\/strong>: All parts (pollen, stem, leaves, flowers) are extremely toxic to cats. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tulips: <\/strong>Tulips contain compounds that can be toxic to cats. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petmd.com\/cat\/poisoning\/sago-palm-poisoning-in-cats\">Sago Palm<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petmd.com\/cat\/poisoning\/sago-palm-poisoning-in-cats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">:<\/a> <\/strong> Often used in arrangements and is highly toxic. Causes liver failure and potentially death.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Carnations: <\/strong> Causes vomiting and diarrhea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Chrysanthemums:<\/strong> Causes vomiting, diarrhea, and incoordination.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Amaryllis:<\/strong> Includes Belladonna, Saint Joseph lilies. Causes vomiting, depression, diarrhea, abdominal pain, hypersalivation, anorexia, and tremors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Oleander: <\/strong>Causes gastrointestinal tract irritation, abnormal heart function, hypothermia, and even death.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Calla Lily: <\/strong>Causes oral irritation, pain, and swelling of mouth, tongue, and lips, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Chocolates, Xylitol and Other Sweets<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the National Confectioners Association, <a href=\"https:\/\/candyusa.com\/news\/valentines-day-and-treats-are-a-perfect-pair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/candyusa.com\/news\/valentines-day-and-treats-are-a-perfect-pair\/\">1% of Americans will celebrate Valentine\u2019s Day with chocolate and candy<\/a>. However, these sweet treats often contain hidden dangers like xylitol and other toxic ingredients that can be harmful to pets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Is Chocolate Bad<\/strong>?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine. Both chemicals can trigger symptoms like increased heart rate, high blood pressure, agitation, tremors, and seizures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although rarely fatal, chocolate ingestion can cause significant illness in pets. Unlike humans, dogs metabolize these compounds much more slowly, making them highly sensitive to their effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Symptoms of Chocolate Poisoning<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your pet is displaying any of the above symptoms, contact your local veterinarian or veterinary emergency clinic immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vomiting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diarrhea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drinking excessively<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hyperactivity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pacing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shaking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Xylitol Toxicity in Dogs&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Xylitol is a sugar substitute and is highly toxic to dogs.
