Rattlesnakes are a fact of life around these parts. Most of us are aware of the dangers snakes pose to us as we hike and camp, or even while we putter around in our own backyards. Rattlesnakes and pets are a particularly disastrous combination, thanks to our pets\u2019 curious nature and unpredictability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you know what to do if you and your pet happen across a rattlesnake? Learning about rattlesnake safety for pets is key to protecting your furry loved one.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Rattlesnake Behavior\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Having a basic understand of rattlesnakes will you avoid a bite. Rattlesnakes often warm themselves in the sun, hunt, migrate and den in the same areas year after year.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Snakes Are Introverts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snakes are shy creatures and prefer to be left alone. Rattlesnakes will not act aggressively unless they are threatened.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Rattlesnake Bite\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A rattlesnake bite is a serious risk to your pet. Once the venom is injected, it begins to act immediately. The blood vessels near the region of the bite are compromised, and an immune response causes severe swelling and pain. Because the venom also affects the blood\u2019s ability to clot, large amounts of blood may be lost. The effects of the venom will lead to shock, and eventually death, if left untreated.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pets are most often bitten on the face, neck, forelegs, and paws, since these are the body parts that are typically closest to the snake. There will be progressive swelling, bruising, and intense pain in the area of the bite, and overall weakness may occur due to low blood pressure. Your pet may also start panting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What To Do If Your Pet Is Bitten<\/b><\/h3>\n<div class=\"flex-shrink-0 flex flex-col relative items-end\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"pt-0\">\n<div class=\"gizmo-bot-avatar flex h-8 w-8 items-center justify-center overflow-hidden rounded-full\">\n<div class=\"relative p-1 rounded-sm flex items-center justify-center bg-token-main-surface-primary text-token-text-primary h-8 w-8\"><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">If your pet is bitten by a rattlesnake, stay calm and seek emergency care immediately. Prompt treatment significantly increases their chances of survival. Before are additions tips:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Stay on the trail <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Snakes love to hide, and can be hard to spot in the brush, tall grass, and rocks alongside a trail. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Keep your dog on a <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dogster.com\/lifestyle\/best-leash-for-dogs-that-pull\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>non-retractable leash<\/strong><\/a>. Keep it <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by your side at all times and stay on the trail while hiking. Avoid letting your dog run free.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Avoid prairie dog colonies <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Rattlesnakes use abandoned prairie dog holes for shelter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Be careful around water <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Rattlesnakes can swim and what looks like stick in the water could actually be a snake.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Protect your property <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Snakes live on a diet of small animals, mainly rodents, so controlling the rodent population around your property is key in limiting rattlesnakes near your home. Keep your yard free of tall grasses and debris, which can make good hiding places for rodents and snakes alike.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>If you come across a rattlesnake <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Back away from the area calmly and quietly, and find a different route. A striking reach of a snake is 5 to 10 feet.
