Hairballs (also known by their scientific name \u201ctrichobezoars\u201d) are not actually ball shaped; rather they are cylindrical, taking the shape of the cat\u2019s esophagus as they are regurgitated. No cat is immune to hairballs, but longhaired varieties are certainly more prone.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can help your cat to cut down on the occurrence of hairballs in a variety of ways:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily brushing, and occasional trips to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/services\/grooming-salon.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">groomer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for long-haired cats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specially formulated cat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/blog\/pet-food-labels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are available that can reduce shedding and encourage hairballs to pass naturally through the digestive system. You may have also witnessed him or her throwing up said green material shortly afterward. This is a normal cat activity that may help him or her to pass hairballs more easily by providing fiber to the digestive tract.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since most houseplants are toxic to cats, it\u2019s a good idea to provide your indoor kitty with his or her own supply of cat grass.
