Unfortunately, with pets living longer than ever, cancer in pets becoming increasingly common, especially among seniors. Cancer remains one of the most common causes of death in adult and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/blog\/74-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">senior<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dogs and cats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of yet, there is no cure for cancer in pets, but with early detection and a commitment to preventive care, we can give our pets the best chance at a long and happy life.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Signs Of Cancer In Pets<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the early signs of cancer in pets is vitally important to catching and treating the illness before it becomes more difficult and costly to treat. Give us call if you notice any of the following symptoms in your pet:<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An area of swelling <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lump or bump that is new, changing, or growing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloating of the belly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of weight or appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of interest in physical activity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty chewing or swallowing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An uncharacteristic odor<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A wound that won\u2019t heal<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coughing or difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A personality or behavior change<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain of unknown origin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new limp<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting or diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to be aware that while not all of these symptoms indicate cancer, none are normal and all of them should be investigated.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Prevent, Prevent, Prevent<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By focusing on prevention protocols and working to keep your pet\u2019s immune system strong, you are giving him or her a huge advantage in the fight against cancer:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Wellness appointments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Your veterinarian is your most important ally in the fight against pet cancer. By making, and keeping, regular <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/blog\/an-ounce-of-prevention-the-importance-of-pet-wellness-exams\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wellness visits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for your pet, you give your veterinarian the opportunity to catch any early warning signs of the disease. We recommend annual or bi-annual wellness examinations, depending on the age and physical condition of your pet.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Maintain your pet\u2019s weight<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Overweight pets are at an increased risk for a variety of health problems, including cancer. Keeping your pet at a healthy weight through a balanced diet and plenty of exercise is an essential part of his or her overall health and well-being.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Spay or neuter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Pets that have been spayed or neutered have a much lower incidence of cancer in the reproductive organs. Consider spaying or neutering your pet, if you have not already done so.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Dental care<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Periodontal disease can lead to a variety of health problems in pets, including certain forms of cancer.
