The spiky seeds of foxtail grasses can seriously harm our pets when they get trapped in their fur or inhaled. So before we head into the great outdoors with our four-legged friends this spring and summer, let\u2019s review the basics of foxtail dangers and how to keep our pets safe.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><b>What Is A Foxtail?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petmd.com\/dog\/care\/how-protect-your-dog-foxtails\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Foxtails,<\/a> also known by various local names such as grass seed awns, mean seeds, timothy, cheatgrass, June grass, or Downy Brome, are annual summer grasses.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike other grass seeds, foxtails come equipped with special barbs at their tips This aids in the seed\u2019s ability to take hold in the soil.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why Are Foxtails And Pets A Bad Combination?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The foxtail\u2019s barbs, which make them so adept at taking root in almost any type of soil or terrain, also give the seeds the perfect vehicle for taking root in your dog\u2019s body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foxtails are especially dangerous because, thanks to the positioning of the aforementioned spiky barbs, they move ever forward, burrowing deeper into your dog\u2019s body via the skin, nose, ears, or even eyes, causing damage to internal structures and organs. The wound left by an embedded foxtail is also the perfect conduit for bacteria to move in, potentially causing even more problems for your pet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on which area of your pet\u2019s body has come into contact with a foxtail, they may display any of the following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonetreevet.com\/blog\/when-is-it-a-pet-emergency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudden head shaking or scratching<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pawing at the face\/nose\/ears<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain, discharge, or odor coming from the ear<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red, watery, or otherwise irritated eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gagging or coughing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limping or stiffness when walking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloody nose<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explosive sneezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swollen or lumpy area on the skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The presence of an open sore or pus<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>What You Can Do <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s impossible to entirely avoid foxtails. However, you can minimize your pet\u2019s exposure by staying away from areas where foxtail grasses are found, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grass-covered trails<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vacant lots<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open fields<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fence lines<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ditches <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Road sides<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other overgrown areas<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trim your dog\u2019s coat regularly, especially between the toes, to help prevent foxtail issues.
